Elena grew up on the outskirts of Lisbon, in a small, run-down house where warmth was scarce and opportunities even scarcer. Orphaned from a young age, she was raised by her grandmother, who barely made ends meet. After finishing ninth grade, Elena dropped out of school and moved to the city, working long hours in a factory for meager pay. Her days were monotonous: twelve hours of work, simple meals, damp rented rooms, and worn-out clothes that barely protected her from the cold.
When she turned 22, her life took an unexpected turn. Through a family arrangement, she met Hugo — a widower nearly forty years older than her. The man was frail, with white hair and deeply wrinkled skin, but rumors spread about his great wealth: multiple properties, investments, and promises to pay for Elena’s grandmother’s medical bills, settle their debts, and even buy the scooter she had always dreamed of.
Elena was terrified. She couldn’t imagine living next to someone so much older. When Hugo first spoke, his calm voice cut through her fear.
“Are you afraid to marry an old man?” he asked gently.
She could only nod shyly.
The wedding was modest, with a few tables of food and distant relatives. Elena invited no friends — she was too ashamed.
